I never had the opportunity to meet John’s paternal grandmother, Leota, yet her presence remains unmistakable in his family. She was its matriarch—a queen whose traditions and influence survived her. John was unquestionably her favorite, and the bond they shared continues in the ways he honors her today. Every year on both her birthday and the anniversary of her passing, we raise a shot of Canadian Club in her memory. Purple dominates this painting because she loved it, while silver leaf honors her place among the grandmothers of this collection. I may never have known Leota personally, but I know—and love—the family she helped shape.
